When I was a kid, straight barbells meant to me pieces of equipment used in the gym to help build muscles. It was something that body builders used. Now, straight barbells are a fashion statement made by people interested in body piercing. I learned much about this new fashion statement during my searches on the internet. From stainless steel to gold, they can be fashioned out of various materials and in various widths. There are several websites that offer straight barbells for purchase. The definition of straight barbells has certainly changed since I was younger. Doing research on this topic has certainly brought me out of the Stone Age and into the modern age.  Whereas the straight barbells from my youth were only used by body builders trying to enhance their muscles, today’s straight barbells are worn by people of all ages and races. They did get their name from the body builder equipment that I mentioned earlier.  This is one of the more common items used in piercings lately and can be put in the tongue, the ear, the nipple and even the genitals, which is not for the faint of heart! For the lobe, a smaller rod width is usually used. 

Many websites offer straight barbells for purchase and can be delivered right to your home.  One can find straight barbells in various metals; from stainless steel, to titanium and gold and in various degrees of width. According to one of the sites, the most common straight barbell size is 14g. When browsing these shops, I found that most places offer a variety of ball forms. One can purchase the traditional round balls, in various sizes. But if you are feeling more creative or adventurous, you can purchase a design. These range from colored balls, to hearts and even dice. While at Busch Gardens last year for Halloween, I saw a few girls who had glow in the dark straight barbells in their tongues. It was pretty cool, too. Every time they opened their mouths to talk, you could see the glowing rod. The straight barbell has become a fashion statement, in a way, for those who choose to wear them. At first, they symbolized a bit of rebellion but now they are just a way for people to express themselves in a different way. I have also heard from various friends that straight barbells can even be used to help enhance sexual pleasure.
